Logic Games appear in the
analytical reasoning section of the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT)
On
the LSAT, four logic games must be completed in 35 minutes, giving just a bit
more than 8 and a half minutes to finish each game.
The game shown here
is an ordering game (grouping games, matching games, and spatial games also
appear on the LSAT) and is generally considered an easier game.
If you
wish to time yourself, you may use the stopwatch at the top of the game. You can
view whether an answer is correct or incorrect by clicking on it (a short
explanation will also appear)(Javascript must be enabled in
order to use the timer or click the answers). A full answer key appears
at the bottom, along with an in-depth set-up and explanation for the game.
3. Which of the following could be true? (A)
B is assigned to the first time slot. (B)
D is assigned to the fifth time slot. (C)
H is assigned to the seventh time slot. (D)
J is assigned to the sixth time slot. (E)
K is assigned to the third time slot.
4. If C is assigned to the
third time slot, then each of the following could be
true EXCEPT: (A)
B is assigned to the fifth time slot. (B)
D is assigned to the sixth time slot. (C)
F is assigned to the fourth time slot. (D)
J is assigned to the first time slot. (E)
K is assigned to the second time slot.
5. If H is assigned to the
first time slot, then which of the following is a
complete and accurate list of all the time slots to which C could be
assigned? (A)
second, fifth, sixth, seventh (B)
second, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh (C)
second, fourth, sixth (D)
second, third, fifth, sixth, seventh (E)
second, third, sixth
6. If J is assigned to the seventh slot, then
which of the following must be assigned to the fifth
slot? (A)
B (B)
C (C)
D (D)
F (E)
K
Incorrect! D must be in a later
time slot than H. This answer choice has D in an earlier time slot.
Incorrect! B and D must occupy consecutive
time slots! In this answer choice, B and D are not consecutive.
Correct!
Incorrect! K and J cannot occupy
consecutive time slots! In this answer choice, K and J are next to each
other.
Incorrect! Either H or F must occupy spot
4, and in this answer B is in spot 4.
Correct! When B is assigned to the third
slot, D must be assigned to the second slot (it cannot be in the fourth spot
because only F and H can be in the fourth slot). This will force H into the
first slot, which will force F to occupy the fourth slot. This leaves slots 5,
6, and 7 still unfilled. Since advertisements K and J cannot be in consecutive
slots, they must split into slots 5 and 7, which will leave C to occupy the
space between them in slot 6.
Incorrect! D must occupy a consecutive
slot with B. D cannot occupy slot one if B is in slot three, since then they
would not be consecutive.
Incorrect! Since B must be consectuve with
D, and D must occupy a later spot than H, it follows that B must also occupy a
later slot than H.
Incorrect! Either J or K can be in slot 5
when B is in slot 3. Although this answer could be true, the question asks for
what must be true.
Incorrect! Either K or J can be in slot 7
when B is in slot 3. Although this answer could be true, the question asks for
what must be true.
Incorrect! B cannot occupy the first slot,
because B must occupy a consecutive slot with D. Since H must occupy an earlier
slot than D, it must also occupy an earlier slot than B. Thus, B cannot occupy
the earliest slot.
Correct! This could be true, in either of
the following scenarios, for example:
J C F H D B K or
F C J H B D K
Incorrect! Since D must be assigned to a
later slot than H, H cannot be assigned to the latest slot.
Incorrect! This is a very tricky answer
choice, but if J is assigned to slot 6, then B and D would have to be assigned
to slots 2 and 3, with H assigned to slot 1. This would force F into slot 4,
leaving only slots 5 and 7 open for K, neither of which would be a legal choice,
since K cannot be next to J.
Incorrect! B must occupy an earlier slot
than K, and D must occupy an slot adjacent to B. Thus, both D and B must occupy
an eariler slot than K, and K cannot be assigned to slot 2.
Incorrect! This answer choice could be
true in many different scenarios. For example:
J F C H B D K
Incorrect! This answer choice could be
true in many different scenarios. For example:
J F C H B D K
Incorrect! This answer choice could be
true in either of the following scenarios:
J H C F B D K or
H J C F B D K
Incorrect! This answer choice could be
true in the following scenario:
J H C F B D K
Correct! K cannot be assigned to the
second slot. Since B must be aired earlier than K and D must be next to B, at
least two advertisements must be aired before K, which means that K cannot be
second.
Incorrect! C could also be assigned to
spot 3 in the following scenarios: H J C F B D K
or H J C F D B K. C also cannot be assigned to
slots 5 or 7, because this would force J and K to occupy consecutive
slots.
Incorrect! C cannot be assigned to slot 4,
since only H or F can be assigned to slot 4.
Incorrect! C cannot be assigned to slot 4,
since only H or F can be assigned to slot 4.
Incorrect! C cannot be assigned to slots 5
or 7, because this would force J and K to occupy consecutive slots.
Correct! This is a complete and accurate
list of the slots to which C could be assigned if H is assigned to the first
slot.
Incorrect! B cannot occupy the fifth slot,
since then D would have to occupy the sixth slot and this would leave no room
for K.
Incorrect! C cannot occupy the fifth slot,
since this would force B and D into slots 2 and 3, H into slot 1, and F into
slot 4. This would then force K to be next to J, which is against the
rules.
Incorrect! D cannot occupy the fifth slot,
since then B would have to occupy the sixth slot and this would leave no room
for K.
Incorrect! F cannot occupy the fifth slot,
since then H would have to occupy slot 4. This would leave no space for B and D,
which need to come after H.
Correct! If J is assigned to the seventh
slot, then F must be assigned to the fourth slot (H cannot be assigned, since
this would not leave enough room for B, D, and K). This will force B and D into
slots 2 and 3, and will force H into slot 1. Only slots 5 and 6 will now be
vacant for K and C, and K will need to occupy slot 5, since it cannot be next to
J.
The Setup To begin solving the game, you
should draw 7 dashes to represent the seven possible time slots for the
advertisements and make a note of the seven advertisements that will fill the
slots, as shown:
B C D F H J K
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
Now you'll want to make a
quick visual representation of each rule, so you can see how the advertisements
could fit into the spots.
Rule #1: BD or DB Rule #2: B K Rule #3: H D Rule #4: 4 = F or H
Rule #5: JK and KJ
B C D F H J K

Before
moving on to the questions, take a moment to combine together the information
and place anything you can into your picture.
Rules 1, 2, and 3 can be combined: (The small
triangle above the B and D indicates that they can switch
places.) Rule #4 can be placed into the
picture.
B C D F H J K

You
should note that if H is chosen for slot 4, then B,D,and K will have to follow
in slots 5, 6, and 7 (B and D can, of course, switch slots with one
another.) If, instead, F is selected for slot 4, then B and D will have a
choice of either being placed into slots 2 and 3 or else into slots 5 and
6.
B and D can now occupy either slots 2 and
3, or else slots 5 and 6, so it is best to create two separate pictures.

In the second scenario, J and K must be
separated in the three remaining spots, so C must come between them.

C can occupy either the second or third
slot in the first picture, and must occupy the sixth slot in the second picture.
Thus, the complete and accurate list of slots which C can occupy is second,
third, and sixth, so answer choice E is correct. If you are
unclear why C cannot occupy spots fifth and seventh which H is first, try
creating a picture and attempting to fill it in with the other advertisements.
You will not be able to separate J and K.
